                  NOUN + NOUN STRUCTURE OR 'S / S' POSSESSIVE STRUCTURE *1

                 We mostly use's  or s' when the first noun po s s e s s e s ,   e x p e r i e n c e s  or ha s  a   r e l a t i o n s hi p  with the second noun.
                 We use a no u n   +   no u n  structure for ot h e r   k i n d s  o f  m e a n i n g .  So th i n g s  do no t   u s u a l l y  take 's/s'. Compare:

                 the dog's name (possession: the dog has a name)        Rita's accident (experience: Rita had an accident)
                 Ed's brother (relationship: Ed has a brother)    Annie's secretary is Ellen's best friend, (relationships)
                 BUT a shoe brush (the shoe doesn't possess or experience the brush; shoes don't have relationships)

                 GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY: one-word noun + noun structures
                 Some short no u n  +   no u n  structures are so co m m o n  that we write them as on e  w o r d ,  for example:
                 armchair  bathroom  bedroom  bookshop  businessman  businesswoman  hairbrush
                 handbag  raincoat  postman  postwoman  schoolchild  suitcase  toothbrush  toothpaste


































               In some answers, both contracted forms (for example I'm, don't) and full                               NOUNS  205
               forms (for example lam, do not) are possible. Normally both are correct.
